| Biography: |
Liesa Norman and Laura Barron possess a comprehensive knowledge of the classical repertoire. However, more importantly, they have each always been committed to exploring other musical styles and collectively also perform jazz, rock, and world music in their Forbidden Flutes ensemble. Their extensive international performing experience as well as Liesa’s experience as an actor and model have well prepared them to work in the television medium. They have also recorded for Sony, Universal, CBC, & NPR and appeared on CTV, VTV, & CBS Sunday Morning. As a multi-instrumentalist, composer and alternative rock singer/songwriter, Liesa has a broad understanding of all musical genres. And as a published writer and yoga teacher, Laura will bring creativity and flexibility to their show’s content. Finally, these seasoned musicians have performed from the Yukon to New Zealand, as solo and ensemble artists. So, their ample exposure to a range of audiences enables them to understand the tastes of a broad demographic which the Flute Doctors aims to reach. |

The Flute Doctors’ punchy, magazine-style format proves that classical music for everyone. Fusing their infectious enthusiasm with two doctorates worth of information about these four hundred years of music, Liesa Norman and Laura Barron will get listeners jazzed about their passion. Their entertaining anecdotes will dispel common misconceptions by providing a context for classical music that relates it to their listeners’ daily life. And their fun factoids, which draw natural parallels between rock, jazz, film and classical music, are designed to peak the interest of everyone from martini-drinking hipsters to the tea and crumpet crowd. The Flute Doctors will also feature interviews with artists, rock stars, celebrated chefs, authors, and architects, which reveal their classical influences. Each episode will include live and recorded performances, as well as CD reviews and recommended playlists for everyday activities. Additionally, the hosts will connect to listeners on the street and through social media networks, including conversations with the public – backstage at musical events, in their local record stores, and throughout their city – to better understand what music moves them. Finally, an interactive website will supports the show’s content. From here, the hosts will field questions that will be answered on air. The site will also offer extended interviews and videos of guests, and it will elaborate on the classical music facts and stories that are covered in each episode. |
