In his own fantasies and his friends’ role-playing games, college boy Justin Keirsey is an undisputed hero, battling barbarian bullies, skewering giant spiders, and taking lethal wounds to help his friends.
But the real world is another story. Terrified to confess his love openly to best friend Elisa Levine, Justin asks her to make him her knight, assuming she’ll figure out he likes her.
But though geeky Elisa also sees the world through a medieval lens, she’s oblivious to Justin’s affection. Thinking he’s asking for a challenge, she bids him earn his knighthood doing a quest with fairytale criteria. Justin must compose an ode of knightly devotion, rescue a damsel—or dude—in distress, and vanquish a monster to earn his knighthood. All in today’s urban context.
To complicate matters, Elisa is enamored with a Casanova hipster. Facing the reality that people see her as a geek, she sets out to reinvent herself as a hipster.
Epic fantasy battle scenes juxtapose with the clumsy reality of Justin’s attempts at heroism, while Elisa must choose between her geeky role-playing friends and the cool hipsters she struggles to emulate.
Between thumpings from his female fight instructor, run-ins with an unimaginative public, and frequent need for paramedics, Justin, armed with a broadsword, hunts down urban monsters and attempts to rescue contemporary damsels in increasingly acute distress.
Pursuing his courage, Justin must inspire Elisa not only to love him, but also to love herself.
But will Elisa learn to accept herself before Justin’s efforts kill him? |
